Has Spring arrived at your house yet?

I made one of these carrot purses and bunny for somebody’s toddler years ago and am not sure of the pattern origin. Of course the old pattern was long gone so… I drew up new carrot and bunny shapes. The bunny is made from terry velour scraps but any kind of knit fabric should work. You can make the purse using big scraps from your stash. Download and print the pdf of the shapes (bottom of this post) if you'd like to try it.

To make the bunny - Cut 2 shapes and sew around the edges of the bunny (leave an opening at the bottom, clip curves, points), turn right side out and stuff with fiberfill. Close opening with whip stitch or overcast. Embroider the face and ears and add a ribbon around the neck. Remember to add some kind of tail. You could sew on a pompom or yoyo - or do like I did and cut out a small circle, gather the edges, lightly stuff, pull gathers tight and attach to the bunny bum.

For the purse, cut 2 linings, 2 orange fabric pieces for outside and at least one carrot shape from low loft batting (2 batting shapes if you want to quilt both sides of purse).

Sew around the edges of the 2 lining pieces right sides together and leave open at the top (stop at the dots). Do the same for the orange outside pieces except add the batting piece to one side. Clip curves and press seams. Turn the orange pieces right side out. Leave the lining right sides together and slide inside the orange piece. Use a chopstick to push lining all the way to the bottom of purse. Bind top of purse with bias tape (use commercial or make your own). Sew a ribbon handle to sides of the bag or make a handle from lining fabric. On the side(s) of purse with batting, use a running stitch to quilt lines and simulate undulations like real carrots (see pic). Embroidery thread, Pearl Cotton or Sashiko thread work well. Insert bunny, baby chicks, eggs, whatever your toddler would like to find and play with.

I celebrated by quilting this treasure from the late 1960s. Mother and Grandmother hand pieced it for son/grandson James. He remembers some cussing during the making of this quilt. It was a pleasure to get to quilt this one and fun revisiting fabrics from my growing up years.

The first set is my new Love Letter Appliqués. Download the free quilt instructions (pictured bottom left) on the free pattern page. There are lots of pictures in the instructions.

You could also draw your own letters or use shapes you already have to make the quilt (Accuquilt?). I made the template shapes in two sizes but you can enlarge or reduce the shapes to the size you need on a photo copier. So far I have made the quilt in the picture, a bigger quilt with the larger letters for my granddaughter, a pillow top and I have an idea for a pincushion. Will post pictures as those projects get finished. Camera battery died so the pillow top picture will have to wait.

And... there is a new quilt to be quilted on the longarm. Very large - Log Cabin in the positive/negative setting. Betty did a beautiful job. It will be fun to work on it.

This quilt just does not photograph well but if you look close you can see that I added granddaughter's name for the bottom row. Fun and the colors are so soft. It came out very girly.

It’s getting close to the time of year when we would be going to Hawaii for a couple of weeks. We’re not going this year because we are in the process of searching for a house. Yup, we’ll be moving “yet again”, probably this summer. The good news is, it will be within the same area so not far to go and we’ll be staying for a while. This will be the 3rd time in less than two years that Bill will take apart my longarm and then set it up again in a new location. Go Bill!

We’ll miss seeing our friends in Hawaii but hopefully next year... Here’s a picture of the latest quilt from my Pineapple E Komo Mai pattern. The center blossom isn’t included in the pattern. For those of you who like the pineapple blossom, a free pdf with the appliqué shape is included in this post. You can download and print. The blossom is layered and fused to the center of the quilt. I blanket-stitched it down by hand but you can appliqué it using your favorite method and or use it however you like.

]]><![CDATA[Starting a new blog and new pattern on Moda Bake Shop]]>Sun, 18 Dec 2011 10:20:44 -0800http://www.craftsisters.com/2/post/2011/12/starting-a-new-blog-and-new-pattern-on-moda-bake-shop.html I had intended to start this blog much earlier in the year but things happened. Moving and settling in happened, among other things, so the blog didn’t. Settling in took a long time.

We’re living out here on the Olympic peninsula with the Olympic Mountains and Strait of Juan de Fuca in view and the Dungeness Wildlife Refuge nearby. It’s beautiful and peaceful and oh so different from the suburbs of Seattle.

Today is a really exciting day. I’m happy to be sharing a new pattern with all of you on the Moda Bake Shop. If you have a chance, check out Sock Santa, Modaelf, and Rudolfarilla and see what you think.
